DRAMA FESTIVAL-2008
"NAVARATHINANGAL" (9 Outstanding Dramas)
7th June 2008 to 15th June 2008
Venue : Infosys Hall, R.K.M.School Campus, T.Nagar.
Navarathinangal - the drama festival featuring nine outstanding Tamil dramas was presented by Mudhra from 7th to 15th June at Infosys Hall, Ramakrishna Mission School, Chennai. The response for this festival was indeed overwhelming with hall - packed audience on all the days. It was heartening to see the rasikas occupying their seats well in advance and viewing each drama with rapt attention. While in the past few months, several drama festivals have been held in Chennai, this festival by Mudhra was unique in many ways. First the invitation and other publicity material was very catchy, thus motivating people to come to the dramas everyday. The dramas chosen also offered a variety fare. The spacious car parking at the venue was a special boon and even if one came a bit late, there was no anxiety of getting space. The delicious and lip-smacking snacks and sweets arranged by Mudhra was the warm welcome extended to rasikas who go to eat a variety of goodies everyday.
The festival began in a grand way on 7th June with a high tea hosted for all the rasikas. The function was inaugurated by M.S.Prakash, General Manager of Indian Overseas Bank and it was grace by eminent dignitaries Dr. Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetti, A. Natarajan, Prema Pandurang, actress Lakshmi and actor RS. The title Nataka Mudhra was conferred on multifaced artiste Y.Gee.Mahendra, for his outstanding contribution to stage dramas. Mudhra Bhaskar, Secretary of mudhra welcomed the overflowing audience and traced briefly, the activities of Mudhra right from its inception.
The first day's play Swadeshi Iyer was a class apart because of its unique, thought provoking theme and outstanding acting of Mahendra. Also, the scene in which Mahathma Gandhi makes his entry really shook the audience and one felt as if Gandhiji himself had come to address everybody so true to life was he. Other dramas like Vinodha Vidumurai, Ammavin Aranmanai revolved around family themes. Chocklate Krishna made you laugh all the way and the out of the ordinary theme, really needs special appreciation. S.V.Shekhar's Alwhaa had the usual fun stuff with Sekhar pulling the leg of various political parties. It was also a nice gesture of Suriya Sweets to sponsor special Halwa to the viewers who came to see Alwhaa!
The grand finale was the drama of Delhi Kumar "Theerndadu Kanakku" in which many tele-serial artists like Sulakshana, Brinda Das, Ramki and others acted. A function preceded the drama and Mudhra's President Dr.Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetti felicitated all the artists and other members of Delhi Kumar Theatres. Dr.Nalli said that the overwhelming response of the audience to give full support, attend as many dramas as possible and encourage all the artists. A.Natarajan felicitated the artists and also appreciated all the drama troupes for their sincere effort.
Nalli, Indian Overseas Bank and Bank of India were the pillars of the festival and their support made it possible to give all the dramas free to rasikas. On the other hand, the large number of rasikas, who attended the festival were instrumental in motivating and bringing out the best from each drama troupe. With a huge audience and a perfect ambience, the drama troupes vied with one another to make their play the most brilliant and sparkling "Rathinam" in the "Navarathinangal" festival hosted by Mudhra.
